DOOM ETERNAL: FPS at its’ core

Ah, DOOM. This game never changes. I recently finished Doom Eternal and I was pleased at how I felt after completing the game. In an industry full of cutting corners, microtransactions, and bullshit excuses, Doom is a breath of fresh air. It’s not about the money, it’s about player experience. The gameplay is fast and fluid, pumped full of adrenaline. Pure fun, nothing else. Doom Eternal has stayed true to its’ roots. Playing Doom Eternal feels like playing Doom in 1993. Sure, the hardware is different and Doom Eternal may look nice, but at its’ core, it’s still the same first person shooter that started it all. Same game, a new coat of paint. In today’s climate, the media and game journalists try to politicize Doom as “ultra-violent, sexist, and misogynic.” The thing is, nobody at Id Software, Bethesda, or gamers in general care about what those journalists have to say. That somehow the people that play and mod Doom are sexist and homophobic. That’s just absurd, yet Schleiner questions in her book, Ludic Mutation: “…if modders are to a certain extent co developers of a conservative, hardcore gaming culture that is homophobic, sexist, and militant.” It’s a video game about a space marine in hell. It’s meant to be fun and the guys at Id Software could care less about what anyone has to say. I really enjoyed my time with Doom Eternal and I’ve made mods for games in the past, and I was never thinking about being sexist, homophobic, or militant. I play games to have fun and escape the world where everyone’s gotta be sensitive to feelings and accept herd mentality as to not offend anyone. Games are played for fun, not to send a political agenda.
